Fair announcements (20)

      Restaurant update – Karla

Restaurant Café Mundo is not here this year, but there is still a possibility Fair might find another restaurant to fill the space, with Sue Theolass’s help, who knows our requirements.

Would there be any objections to Council make the final decision if a restaurant is offered? See discussion below…

Workshop & Demo report – Beth

Workshops are submitting to OCF this weekend, come talk to Beth during breakdown. Performances on the Green are limited to 40 minutes because a tree blocks rear of stage access. Those on Zoom can send an email. Beth Mottweiler: bethmottweiler@gmail.com , or call 541-525-9588

Decon & construction liaison reminder – Nathan

Village’s expectation for construction and decon: Fair also has expectation. Booths should be deconned by the end of Monday post-Fair: loose litter, loft up, furniture secured. If you come to Teddy Bears Picnic please camp on ground, not in a loft. Final deadline for decon is TBP day. A Council member will be watching. OCF deadline for decon and cleanup is the end of August.

Volunteers needed to help with Village Decon, especially those who did not do pre-Fair work parties. Volunteers will get fed and can camp out through Wednesday post-Fair. Please contact Nathan. 541-852-3163 ngeorgitis@gmail.com

      Construction Report – Rick

R541 543 0624, prefers to communicate via text messages. Will be onsite 11am on the 19th of May for site assessment, his construction team will also be there. Give him notice if you see a needed project. Or join him then.

      Camping update – Sharon

Cary: Sharon is still coord but is not here tonight. Please confirm your camping plans via email, if you are new, email should include, name and booth and perhaps desired location, responses will come eventually. Returnees:  Next month you can check in to say where you are gonna be, if it’s the same as last year. cvillagecamping@gmail.com
Do they need to know if the camping spot is not in Village designated areas?  Need to notify our camp host? Not needed, but good if people need to look for you.

      Site Report – David

Emerald Ash Borer is a growing planning issue. No firewood allowed onsite so far. Shady Grove path cleared. Little People tree: top branch came down and took out the Shady Grove fence.

      Registration rap

John: the Drill: need info first, so update the spreadsheet John sent you (Booth Coord) want your reply by the end of May…a little flexibility. Funding/paying can be a bit different this year. Individuals can go online and pay for pass that way, or do it the old way: give a check to John for your booth. John: 541 345-6822 jflan@efn.org

Theme poll decision – Sam (15)

We did a brainstorm last month, whittled that down for part 2 + some new ideas. Did a star rating poll for Part 2. 89 people participated. “Love Grows Here” is the first choice. Runoff phase, top option is again “Love Grows Here”, “Plant Justice Harvest Peach” was 2nd. Today we decide. Lotsa applause for the 1st one. No other choices prefered. Consensus!! Can booths riff off this by changing the 1st word? Why Not?

Justice and Equity Discussion – Jade (15)

See the presentation HERE: and screen shared images below.

Jade: Good job with quick consensus of the theme. This agenda item will be regular at Village meetings.

Being kind is easy, uprooting oppressive structures and belief is challenging. This is not a new conversation. Still needs addressing! Today: Go over structures, establish shared language, share learning resources, empower reflection and act, kick off conversations in your booth.

Take action to make change. There is an Equity Facilitation Team…take responsibility…anyone can join this team, just like the Village Fire Crew.  Why center antiracism? There are intersecting systems of oppression. We need to integrate this work into all we do, and center those most impacted.

White supremacy shows up in so many ways in community organizing. (See screen photo) This is something we all need to keep in our forefront, some progress has been made. (See screen photo) Start with the positive before the concerns. (See screen photo) Discomfort can help. It’s important to discuss this at your booth level. (See screen photo) Would love for booths to share your discussion during Booth Reports.

Restaurant Decision

Is the Village OK letting Council make a decision about a 1 year only restaurant? Café Mundo will be back 2025. Limited Food Booths available this year, we may not get a choice, Sue is trying and she knows our requirements, 1, maybe 2, choices. We don’t know when we will be given options. May not be in time for the Village to weigh in. Council meetings are always open to any participation to help make decision and that will happen. Want Council to decide, really wants a restaurant, don’t want Village to get in the way. Hope OCF will give us time, wants to participate. Are there parameters? What are they? Council has a sense of our parameters. Food vouchers will be the same. Consensus to let Council make decision with any notice available with traditional parameters.

Activist Report – John A for Klamath Bird Observatory in Community House (5)

Thanks, Jade, for their presentation. KBO is in their 20th year. We have lost 3 billion birds in the USA. 50% of Pacific Northwest birds are in decline. (See below for his full report) KBO has developed and using conversation science. Conservation can affect minority communities. So much more……

David: KBO is reacting with all kinds of indigenous communities.

Booth Breakdown (40) and Booth Reports (5)

This was hard for some folks to access their booth’s breakout room. Sorry.

Doors: Will pay attention to Jade’s sharing. David Rodgers has 2 gigs during Fair, Frog is back in hospital with serious breathing problems.

Dea Spirit: New theme discussion, like the new choice! We will be working on opening ceremony for 10:30AM Friday. It is Sam & Taylor’s 20th anniversary, and Arthus & Anita are going on 30 years. Other folks? Let Spirit know this special stuff for inclusion in the ceremony. Dea Lisk (541) 543-8832 dealisk@yahoo.com

House: Fun to welcome Mary, a new Master Gardener, will l have Emerald Ash Borer planning info at their booth.

P&J talked about a guy from Ukraine sending messages of love and support who will be collecting voice recordings during Fair. Will also address the Gaza disaster as well.

Non-Fair announcements (5)

Likes Star Voting, not complicated. Vote!!

Weekend is U of O Mother’s Day Powwow

Territorial has Miller Brothers this weekend for dance floor. Awesome.

Support artists on the Autism Spectrum who are on display at Valley River Center to look at and purchase.

Strokes n Pokes (5)

Facilitating is really hard with Hybrid meetings

Consensus reached fairly easily

Don’t need a speaker with mic pointing at it…

We are now in pre-pre-Fair. Only 67 days till Fair!!!!!!

KBO Report

Klamath Bird Observatory Activist Report

  • 3 Billion
  • 50%
  • Migratory birds
  • Full annual cycle conservations
  • Understand threats that limit populations on breeding grounds, along migratory pathways and turn them into population relevant conservation strategies
  • A significant barrier to doing this has been the imperialistic nature in which science and conservation are implemented in the neotropics
  • To overcome these barriers, since the early 1990s KBO has been developing and implementing a successful international conservation model focused on capacity building and co-learning
  • More recently, the conservation community is also better addressing the fact the post-settlement management of natural resources has been wrought with environmental injustices, and even some of our significant conservation achievements have come at a cost to marginalized communities
  • As such the bird conservation community and KBO is working to elevate DEIJ as an essential part of our conservation initiates
  • We recognize that without doing this, we will not be successful in our efforts to reverse the bird population declines
  • This includes integrating objectives focused human wellbeing measures as part of our conservation actions
  • This includes centering conservation actions on water security, fires security, food security, and economic security for all effected parties
  • By ensuring that conservation initiatives include multiple benefits outcomes, especially for front line communities, we will increase interests and capacities for underrepresented communities to participate in the co-produced development and implementation of conservation investment strategies

A Conservation Listening Session. The caring of the natural world takes all of us, but the conservation community hasn’t always been open to all. Join us at the Oregon Country Fair for an opportunity to make your voice heard to the conservation community. This listening session is focused on marginalized communities, but is open to all.

In addition to the listening session we proposed below, we will also integrate concepts of DEIJ in the tasks we ask StewardShip Passport participants to complete. Each year when we host a Passport Station at our booth in the House, we ask participants to explore other booths in CV and come back and report to us what they have learned. Our intent is to use our role in the Passport Program to encourage further engagement with all of our CV partners. This year, we are thinking of integrating a DEIJ learning opportunity into that task — something like, “please explore CV and learn about how others are integrating DEIJ into what they do to make our world a better place?” We’d welcome CV feedback on this.

Does Jade need to be given permission to share screen?

Paul Simon 7:14 PM
I’m curious if we’re going to eventually move away from Zoom being an option for the meetings..? 90% of it is showing up, doesn’t feel to me like showing up virtually really counts… I personally feel far less connected to what’s going on… guessing a lot of folks are half paying attention, at best..?

Pam Hardy 7:16 PM
Zoom is pretty important for folks that live outside Eugene (I live in Bend).  It’s also helpful for reducing carbon emissions for folks like me.

Claire Marshall 7:17 PM
Living in Seattle, I really appreciate the Zoom option!🙂

Ingrid Scheel 7:17 PM
And accessible for folks who are open to socializing outside but still don’t want to do larger group settings indoors.

Paul Simon 7:20 PM
I guess this is more aimed towards people that could physically be there, but it’s far more convenient to not be… I teach a yoga class that ends at 6:30, way easier to not drive there, and I personally feel far less connected to what’s happening, wondering how others are feeling..?

Pam Hardy 7:22 PM
I hear you.  I’d much rather be there in person because it’s so much better for building community.  It’s just unrealistic in so

Accept that there are many ways to get to the same goal. Look for the tendency for a group or a person to keep pushing the same point over and over out of a belief that there is only one right way and then name it.

jade (he/they) 7:25 PM
Guidelines for moving forward!

  • When working with communities from a different culture than yours or your group’s, be clear that you have some learning to do about the communities’ ways of doing
  • Notice when people are simplifying complex issues, particularly when the stakes seem high or an urgent decision needs to be made
  • Don’t require those who raise hard issues to raise them in ‘acceptable’ ways, especially if you are using the ways in which issues are raised as an excuse not to address those issues
  • Assume that everybody has a valid point and your job is to understand what that point is
  • Understand that discomfort is at the root of all growth and learning; welcome it as much as you can

Lareina 7:25 PM
Could Rick speak?

jade (he/they) 7:26 PM
Booth discussion questions: Did the conversation about white supremacy remind you of any dynamics or practices in your booth or in the Village? (could be positive or negative feedback)

  • How would you approach the work in your booth differently if more folks in your booth were not white, straight, cisgender, able-bodied? How can you shift that dynamic before changing who is in the booth? If you put yourself in the shoes of others, what would make you feel comfortable and welcome?

*Remember you may not know people’s identities and shouldn’t ask people to share

jade (he/they) 7:26 PM

  • How would you approach your work at the fair if the demographics of attendees were more diverse? How can you make your booth and presence more welcoming now?
  • How does your booth’s mission intersect with racial justice? What about queer and trans liberation?

How can you reflect those intersections in your booth’s offerings and programming at the fair? How can that tangibly uplift people of color who are affected? How can that tangibly uplift queer and trans people who are affected?

Paul Simon 7:28 PM
A lot of what seems to be happening in the Village seems to be reflective of what’s happening in the larger world… we seem to be collectively delegating the really important decisions to smaller and smaller groups of people to decide for us… it’s convenient, not necessarily beneficial.
Isn’t a knock to the council, but it seems to be a theme that time frequently becomes an issue, and important issues seem to frequently get
