Fair Announcements (10)

Kim: We need more facilitators, see link. Reach out: lizzycordich@gmail.com

Jane: Saturday, 15 March, Emerald ash borer walk 10-12am https://oregoncountryfair.net/

John A: encouraged all to keep an eye of the board activity, need feedback and engagement. John Alexander, OCF Board member JohnA.OCF@zeezle.net  541-890-7067 — I welcome discussion & input for OCF BOD business, EAB Task Force, or anything OCF, birds, Grateful Dead, whatever. Phone preferred, email okay and may take up to a week for me to see. Thanks.

Tim – Sam: Social gathering for Villagers at Whirled Pies, Feb 27th at 6:30-ish to just hang out. Designed to keep up our social interactions, be together, grow socially together.

Site Report – David (5)

VegeMatic last Sunday, place was cool.

Consensus Rap – Sam (10)

Some of us have more consensus experience than others, this is kinda an introductory look. Who can block is often where the discussion starts, but at the beginning it should be an orientation to hearing each other and working together. Anyone of us can say a decision is bad for the community and stop change. But if we engage with each other and seek outcomes that all can live with, hearing each other in a deep way, we can get to a place where all our decisions are ones we can all live with, and no one has to feel bad about the decision. We can be “all in.” It often takes many meetings to come to a decision, maybe a small group works to build solutions and present them. Sometimes after many meetings someone shows up who hasn’t been in the discussion before and can really derail the process.
Consensus often gets laughed at because it “wastes time”, but everyone has a say and can have input so if we can cross our bridges before the decision, it results in cohesiveness.

Chat: Thanks Sam for the wonderful rap!  Loved it.  Here’s a link to my website in case folks want written info:  https://effectivecollective.net/   Click on the “consensus” tag in the Library section for a bunch of handouts and stuff.

Skeeter: back in ’77 I suggest that we read an old paragraph about our early consensus description. 4 points of unity, which we don’t have, restate our values etc.

Sam would love to have a small group to reexamine our shared values. Talk more later…
Chat: Just adding to the consensus rap and additions that it’s so connected to the conversation last year about uprooting white supremacy in these spaces and consensus is such a great way we embody those values and exist in community. I really cherish the opportunity to use and practice that way of interacting in the village.

(See the complete Chat record below these notes…)

Construction Report – Diane (10)

No report. Construction schedule can be found here: https://communityvillageocf.org/calendar/

Booth Coord Meeting Update (5)

Kim: This will take place at East Blair Housing Project hosted by Fred from IC on a Friday in March, info will be coming. Every booth should be represented…it’s networking, how does each booth operate, etc. There will be more… Date will be posted on the DRUM.

New Restaurant Process (10)

Sam: Café Mundo will not be back, but may be a cart someday… This is short notice for Food Committee to vet everyone, and we do participate in deciding. Fair did not do an open call out this year. How can we fill the space?

OCF has 5 vendors who might be interested in a one-year basis. They’d need to submit a menu etc. We would look at the viable vendors that we can discuss at our next March meeting. What would a booth expect from us in terms of construction, maintenance, financial resources, what is our vision for 2026, would we want to invite then back if we like them? Is our principal goal to find someone for multi years?

Jain: Dread’s having NO food booth. We should say we’ll keep you if we like you.

Brian: Yes to the come back possibility. Do we have to go through the process every year?

Karla: We do have to work with food committee especially for a new restaurant, we can’t just pick. We can suggest. They call out based on our input, they don’t wanna have to similar restaurant menus too close to each other.

Taylor: We have a lot more notice than last year. Lotsa requirements and work for brand new booths to get done. Maybe use the space for something else if no restaurant…

Skeeter: Do we really wanna have a food booth…we could do village networking something. Share info about options on Drum…

Sam: No equal opportunity requirement for the process of internal booths. We’ll find out in early March and discuss at March meeting. It would be nice if we can get one we like and then we should have a consensus decision after fair to invite them back or not.

Tim: Mundo Greg will help get the space ready installing the flooring, etc.

Scott: Food brings people to the village. I know a booth that would be very interested. I definitely want food there.

Karla: We may not be able to make a decision to NOT have a restaurant there, it’s up to food committee prolly. Plus, we don’t have a budget to do any new construction.

Omo: We need to have a restaurant, especially the coffee. He will help with labor if needed.

One Fun Thing – Sam (10)

Let’s do some show’n’tell… 😊 Sam has some cotton wood plant, see the serious roots!!
Alex: Shakedown Street gift exchange. New parachute for Youth Power: Chantel
Jason’s cat, meow. Also somebody’s dog. Tim’s mouse. More… Home spun basket. Why did the frog cross the road…Frog ‘goes to summer camp’ book. See the goldfish… Sam has a knitted F-bomb. Jamel sings something, loves us all!

Activist / Booth Presentation (10)

Sue: Talk to Council if you wanna do a report in coming meetings. Littlevillage.coordinator@gmail.com

Boy, it is a time to be an activist!! We’ve had a coup, time to jump in. CALC, Transponder, more… April 15 taxes are due. Over 50% of taxes go to war expenses. Our military also has biggest carbon footprint in the world. Make a statement by underpaying your taxes. 541-731-1189 to call Sue for how-to, and a training coming up in March. Join the Wednesday vigil 4:30-6 at the old federal building 7th n Pearl to hold signs for peace in the middle east.
This site posts suggested specific actions each day, like “today call your congressperson about this”  https://chopwoodcarrywaterdailyactions.substack.com/

*Note your State and Federal taxes are quite different. The state does some violent things but the state does not have a military nor ICE etc. So remember that you might consider paying state but not federal taxes.

Path Planning Update (15)

Karla: Kaitlyn, David and Karla were there at the sub-committee meeting. The Executive Director thought we wanted to make the new path. It was brough to us in 2015, wouldn’t be started on till 2-3 years from now if we move on this. They asked, “do we really want it on the to do list?” and we said yes. They have been invited to the subcommittee if we wanna do it. David Tipton brought it in the beginning. The purpose then was partly to relieve 13th traffic, which is no longer a problem. Erosion was not mentioned in the meeting. Tim found all the maps and consensus text we did before. The booth that was in the way has retired so that obstacle is gone. https://communityvillageocf.org/proposal-for-village-expansion/

Tim: let’s think seriously about it, see the drawings, they are pretty cool.

Scott: a lot of folks were excited. We ought to work on this soon!  Let’s take action on this.

Kim: question…how do we join the path planning subcommittee? Whoever wants to could be involved. Dea had mentioned wanting to be on it.

Diane: Where would we have quiet space and keep the green space??

Skeeter: one option would be to consent to tell fair that we are considering it.

Sam: We did have a consensus back in 2016. That decision should stand. That list should be where we start the discussion. Path would go from Peace Parker. This link here has a lot of great info and drawings… https://communityvillageocf.org/proposal-for-village-expansion/

David: Issue is safety with a dead end cul-de-sac. May take up pyramid and dome and quiet area, and change that area a lot.

Dea: Earl Newman’s booth is who retired, been there since the beginning. Back then we thought we didn’t have enough space in the Village. IC and Rainbow Village and 4A could use a new space, or other booths, too.

Grant committee set up, discussion? (15)

Tim: This is an opportunity to highlight the nonprofit work represented in the Village. For example, we could have speakers talk about autism, interactive workshops, awareness building activities. It is not a competition with the other groups.

Michael: we need action to stop our dictator this would be very excited to save this country. WILL HELP.

Kim: add the description in the minutes. (see below…)

David: we are unique and friendly, top 20 events in the world. We provide free drinking water; all our stuff is handmade and we have a worldwide effect.

Rowan: I have a cordial relationship with our senators who will stand the ground. Please reach out to them!!

Here is the text of what we got from OCF – “The Board will fund innovation in the educational programs that include Energy Park, Community Village, Craft Demonstrations, Archaeology, Sustainability, Spoken Word, and the Still Living Room. Each of these areas may submit a proposal for a project that would be educational, innovative and participatory, if possible. We would fund up to $5000 per year on one or more projects. The proposals must not add additional wristbands and must take place within the boundaries of each location. A committee of the board will meet yearly to review and recommend projects that meet these criteria for approval by the board. The proposals are due in September and grants will be approved in October. This program will start in 2025.”

Sam: Let’s not be partisan. Pro people, planet, etc. Would be great if we came up with a coordinated village approach among our non-profits.

Taylor: We should reach out to other areas, what do we wanna build? Would be cool to have something that happened across the Fair. Us + Them!

Omo: When Moveon.org came through years ago, he said birds need both right and left wings… Let’s support how to bring folks together.

Jair: Encroaching on democracy is something we can counter.

Un-Fair announcement (5)

John A: Last year we had an elder give a speech, a CV founder, and can’t remember his name… Anyone? Nope… Ask Plato and/or Beth because he was on the stage.

Omo: Autism Rocks has art show near the bowling alley in VRC, go check it out when you are there. It features great art by people on the spectrum.

Choane; TLC is happening at end of this month, Environmental Law UO Law 2025 – 3-3. https://www.pielc.org/

Taylor’s knit and crochet group Whiled Pies for group activity. Tuesday evenings usually;

Lala W: A plug for community supported hats, gloves, need donations

Skeeter: Winona LaDuke activist will appear Tues 3-4 free, speaking about the watershed, door at 5, show at 6. Erb Memorial Union.

K’Rene: Asking: where to have our CV meeting in April and May? TBA… Maybe UU Church…

Fred and Skeeter are the best, thank Sue for stepping up.

CHAT:

I enjoy reading these brief paragraphs on the village website when reflecting upon my choices:
“Love Goes Here
Community Village
is a part of the Oregon Country Fair Family and is dedicated to education, information access, and networking for progressive social change. We create a spiritual center manifesting the Village Vision of love, peace, trust, justice, cooperation, equality, and social service. By believing in dreams, thinking of others, valuing differences, and experimenting with new ideas, we hope to expand our consciousness, growing beyond the Fair into the world at large.
WE AGREE
We agree to not engage in hear-say and to encourage others to not participate in hear-say. We agree to speak with honor, integrity and respect about each other; in the event we have constructive criticism to share, we will talk to each other directly, though using another as a sounding board is OK. We agree to try to operate from a place of trust that we do not mean each other harm.
OCF CODE OF CONDUCT
We are an association of equals. Each and every member of our community is entitled to respectful and equitable treatment by all other participants. The Guidelines apply whenever and wherever we gather for OCF activities or discussion, in person or online.
The OCF is committed to the principles of
non–violence. Mental, verbal, physical, or sexual abuse will not be tolerated.

I want to speak up for Rainbow Village that I know we are one of the booths that could get a larger space through this process, so we’d love to stay in the planning and conversation for this. We love our space with Peace and Justice now, but it is teeny tiny and we are definitely limited by the space

that is my question, too

Sam Rutledge 7:56 PM
Here is the text of what we got from OCF – The Board will fund innovation in the educational programs that include Energy Park, Community Village, Craft Demonstrations, Archaeology, Sustainability, Spoken Word, and the Still Living Room. The proposals are due in September and grants will be approved in October. This program will start in 2025.

Our PLANET’S most existential issue is climate change.  I really enjoyed the year that each booth thought about how their particular booth intersected with this issue
